Announcing: iCON Chinese Health Forum - March 6 & 7 2021

This year, iCON is preparing to host a free Chinese Health Forum on Preventing and Managing Stoke. Given the prevalence of early stroke and heart disease, learning how to prevent, recognize, and treat the symptoms of a stroke can make a huge difference.

This event, taking place on Saturday, March 6, and Sunday March 7, 2021 is designed for seniors, families, and caregivers who are interested in learning about early detection, risk factors, treatment, and management of stroke.

Learn How to Access and Navigate the Health Care System in BC

The interCultural Online health Network (iCON) and S.U.C.C.E.S.S. invite you to our upcoming event on March 27 from 10:00 am – 11:30 am PDT. Join us on Zoom for an interactive presentation to learn how to access and navigate the health care system in BC.

Barbara Ho, Registered Nurse and Winnie Lau, Registered Psychiatric Nurse, will discuss:

  • Strategies and resources on how to navigate the BC healthcare system and health coverage such as the Medical Services Plan (MSP)
  • Tips for finding a family physician and accessing virtual care when staying at home
  • Services for mental health support presented by S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and iCON

This event will be presented in Mandarin.

Webinar Recording: Digital Health: Healthy Apps for You!

On February 3, 2021 Dr. Noah Alexander presented the digital health webinar Healthy Apps for You, introducing how digital apps can meaningfully support your health journey and how you can find apps which suit your specific needs. The event showcased a variety of physician recommended apps which can help you navigate health services, improve overall health, manage medications and support healthy sleep, nutrition, mindfulness and exercise habits. Helpful tips to assess health apps in general were also provided.

Webinar Recording: Diabetes Care While Staying at Home

On January 27, 2021, Laura Ng, Registered Nurse and Diabetes Educator, presented the webinar Diabetes Care While Staying at Home. The presentation featured information on:

  • Tips and resources to help you self-managing diabetes at home
  • Signs and symptoms and when to seek professional medical help
  • Strategies to help prevent diabetes complications

Webinar Recording: Coping Well with Chronic Conditions at Home

On January 26, 2021, Dr. Tigerson Young, Registered Psychologist, presented the webinar Coping Well with Chronic Conditions at Home. The presentation featured information on:

  • How to cope with stress while managing your chronic diseases at home
  • Signs of high stress levels and anxiety, and how they affect your daily life
  • Tips for staying mentally healthy while living with chronic illness during times of self-isolation

Webinar Recording: Managing Your Medication

On December 5, 2020, iCON hosted an online webinar on the topic of “Managing your Medication. Pharmacist Kent Ling gave a presentation on managing senior’s medications. He described best practices for using many common household medications, including decongestants, antihistamines, and common pain medications. Pneumoccocal and Shingles vaccines were also discussed.

Webinar Recording: Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes – Staying Safe at Home

Cardiologist Dr. Siu Him Chan discusses the relationship between heart disease and diabetes. He describes how these two diseases are diagnosed and the treatment options available in Canada. The presentation includes a list of top 10 tips for managing cardiovascular health.

Save the date! Chinese Health Forum - February 22, 2020

For the eleventh year iCON will be hosting a free Chinese health forum on the theme of “Healthy@Home: Living Well with Chronic Conditions - Arthritis and Osteoporosis”. The forum will be held on February 22, 2020 at the Chinese Community Centre, Vancouver. There will be an Open House from 10:30 am - 12:00 pm and the Health Forum from 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm.

Digital Health Literacy Workshop - February 8, 2020

To kick off the new year, iCON will be hosting a free workshop focusing on Digital Health Literacy. The workshop will take place on Saturday, February 8, 2020 from 10am-12pm at the St. Francis Xavier Parish Life Center (438 Great Northern Way, Vancouver). Dr. Kendall Ho will be discussing how technology (e.g. mobile phone apps and online tools) can help you better manage your health!

2016 Health Forum

Forum presentersOn December 3, 2016, iCON held a free Chinese Health Forum: Healthy and Happy Living at Home at the Peretz Centre in Vancouver. With over 300 people in attendance, and more than 80 people participating via webcast, the Forum attracted a mix of seniors and caregivers looking for tips and advice for living healthily at home and accessing community and government services for seniors.

Celebrating 10 years of service and partnership with the Chinese community, iCON hosted a free Chinese health forum expanding on the theme of “Healthy@Home: Living Well with Chronic Conditions”. The forum was held on October 13, 2018 at the Fraserview MB Church in Richmond, BC.
